CSPG02FT Structures and Hydrocarbons in the “Undeformed” Southern Plains

The trip will use outcrops, regional maps and accompanying case studies to explore the interaction between tectonics, clastic deposition, and hydrocarbon reservoirs and trapping. These relationships will be discussed and illustrated from the reservoir to basin scale.

Main highlights will include:

  • Outcrop exposures of three styles of faulting, including compressional fold-thrust structures, tens of kilometres from the traditional foothills front
  • Discussion of relationship between structures and nearby producing fields
  • Discussion of interplay between Cretaceous faulting and sedimentary facies distribution
  • Outcrop exposures of several Cretaceous reservoir intervals, with focus on Milk River Fm
  • Overview of the “Triangle Zone” deformation and structural trap fairway in the eastern foothills

Marian Warren completed a bachelor’s degree in geology and astronomy/physics at Williams College, Massachusetts. After a stint as an instructor and astronomical observatory technician at Williams, she pursued geology, completing a M.S. in Appalachian tectonics at the University of Vermont, and a PhD in Canadian Cordilleran tectonics at Queen’s University, Canada. She joined EnCana (then PanCanadian) in Calgary in 1997, where she held roles as geologist, geophysical interpreter and structural specialist. Her focus has been on exploration in new or known structurally-influenced clastic and carbonate plays, with projects in the Alberta foreland basin and foothills, including the Mississippian Banff B Pool discovery at Ferrier, and in the Quebec Appalachians, in the central African rift system in Chad, and in exploring for unconventional gas in the French Aquitaine Basin. She has also been involved in developing and presenting numerous technical training courses and field trips for EnCana technical staff, the CSEG, CSPG, Nautilus GTA and other client organizations. Marian was a co-recipient of the CSPG Medal of Merit in 2003, winner of the AAPG Matson (Best Paper) Award in 2004, and served as an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer in 2006-2007, in the category of Case Studies in exploration. She currently has a consulting company, Jenner GeoConsulting, based in Calgary, Canada, with services applied worldwide in structural geology, new plays/ frontier basin exploration and professional training.
