CSPG01FT Siliciclastic Depositional Systems in the Cretaceous Book Cliffs Utah - Colorado: Applications to the Subsurface
With over 300 km of awesome outcrop, the Book Cliffs of Utah are a world-class field laboratory for studying clastic sedimentology, sedimentary architecture and sequence stratigraphy, and are an outcrop analog for fluvio-deltaic and shoreface-to-shelf hydrocarbon reservoirs worldwide, at both an exploration- and a development-scale. These famous rocks have been used to develop, test and refine sedimentological and stratigraphic ideas and models over the years, including the principles and concepts of sequence stratigraphy. This field trip will focus on the following themes: (a) sedimentology and three-dimensional sedimentary architecture of fluvial, coastal plain, river- and wave-dominated deltas, and shoreface-to-shelf depositional systems, (b) stacking patterns in high versus low accommodation settings, (c) distribution of reservoir and non-reservoir facies in a predictive sequence stratigraphic framework, (d) relationship between relative sea level, shoreline position and stratigraphic architecture, and (e) applications of outcrop analog data to the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. Join us on this field trip to the Book Cliffs where we will integrate classic sedimentological and stratigraphic research with the latest breaking research on fluvial-shoreline-shelf depositional systems.

Dr. Simon A.J. Pattison, P.Geo. is Professor and Chair of Geology at Brandon University where he specializes in marginal- to shallow-marine clastic sedimentology, sedimentary architecture, sequence stratigraphy, and reservoir modeling. His 20+ years of experience encompasses both outcrop- and subsurface-based projects, including the Cretaceous Book Cliffs of Utah and Colorado, Cretaceous Cardium and Viking formations of Canada, and the Tertiary Niger Delta. In addition, Simon has over 6 years of direct industry experience with Esso Canada, Shell International and Shell Nigeria, where he worked as an exploration, production and reservoir geologist. Dr. Pattison continues to actively research the Cretaceous strata in Utah as demonstrated by recently published peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous oral/poster presentations at international conferences. He has led 28 applied geological field seminars to the Book Cliffs region since the early 1990s and has successfully trained over 500 petroleum industry professionals. These rocks are important outcrop analogs for fluvial, deltaic and shoreface-to-shelf hydrocarbon reservoirs worldwide.
