CSPG32SC The Geology of Sandstone Reservoirs

This course discusses both conventional and tight gas reservoirs with case histories from the Belly River and Glauconitic in Southern Alberta, the Cardium in NW Alberta and the Nikanassin/Minnes in NE BC. The course shows how one performs a systemic reservoir geological evaluation starting with the rock (core workshop and cuttings workshops). We will also be reviewing the use of petrography, in particular thin section analysis, and special core analysis (capillary pressures and relative permeability). The latter are critical for understanding the reservoir plumbing and helps derive reservoir limits or cut-offs. The course discusses furthermore how to use this rock data in log analysis. Integrating production and pressure data, the course shows how all work is used to generate maps and to develop a reservoir management strategy.

This course is intended for junior and intermediate geologists and anyone else interested in learning ‘what makes a sandstone reservoir tick’.

The course instructor is Godfried Wasser, M.Sc., P.Geol. He has over 25 years experience in the oil industry, both in Canada and overseas. Godfried has worked as an exploration, an exploitation or development geologist, and as a regional geologist. He has worked both on staff and as consultant through his company Eucalyptus Consulting Inc. Godfried has a master’s degree in Sedimentology from the Dutch State University of Utrecht. He has published and presented papers mostly relating to reservoir geology. Godfried has taught in-house at companies such as PanCanadian (now Encana), Gulf Canada Resources and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. He has taught industry courses through the C.S.P.G. and internationally in Indonesia and Egypt through various agencies.
