CSPG14SC Practical Sequence Stratigraphy: Concepts and Applications

This two-day course presents the concepts and practical applications of sequence stratigraphy for petroleum exploration. Workshop exercises will emphasize the recognition and correlation of sequence stratigraphic surfaces on well log cross-sections.

Following the course, participants will have a clear understanding of the use of sequence stratigraphy for predicting facies types and geometries away from control points.

Ashton Embry, PhD
Geological Survey of Canada

Ashton Embry began drawing log-based stratigraphic cross sections in 1967 and always has a few on the go. He worked with Mobil Canada and BP Canada in the early to mid 70s and joined the Geological Survey of Canada in 1977. His research at the GSC has focused on the stratigraphy, sedimentology and petroleum geology of the Mesozoic succession of the Sverdrup Basin. This basin has excellent outcrops covering basin edge to basin centre and also has well and seismic control. It has proved to be an excellent laboratory for testing proposed concepts in sequence stratigraphy and for developing new ones. Ashton has published a number of papers and given numerous talks on sequence stratigraphy.
