GAC003FT Geoscience of Saskatchewan Potash Deposits


Location: Starting in Saskatoon – Ending in Regina

Two day course that examines the economically significant potash deposits of Saskatchewan. Trip includes a tour of an underground mine touring a solution mine operation just outside of Regina, and core viewing at the Saskatchewan subsurface laboratory.

Summary: Tours of an underground potash mine and a surface potash solution mine. An informal potash core viewing session conducted by Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources geologists.

May 5th Itinerary
The field trip will commence at 7:00 am on May 5th, departing from Saskatoon and travelling to the Agrium Inc. Vanscoy potash facility. The tour will include an underground portion and a tour of the surface processing facilities. Afternoon event being planned; then depart for Regina.

May 6th Itinerary
Vans will depart at 8:00 am for The Mosaic Company’s Belle Plaine solution mining facility. In addition to touring the facility a Mosaic representative will give a short presentation on the mechanics of the solution mining process. After lunch delegates will be taken the Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources sub-surface core laboratory, for an informal core presentation and potash tutorial. 

The field trip will conclude at approximately 4:00pm on May 6th.

AC8437 departing Regina at 5:10pm, arriving Calgary 6:32pm

AC8439 departing Regina at 8:20pm, arriving Calgary 9:42pm

WestJet flights from Regina to Calgary May 6th:

WJ129 departing Regina at 6:50pm, arriving Calgary 8:07pm

General Information:
Breakfast will be included on the morning of the 5th and 6th, all other meals are not covered in the cost of the field trip. Any transportation not directly related to the field trip (i.e. travel to and from the airport), will be the responsibility of individual delegates.

Jason Berenyi
A graduate of the University of Regina, Jason Berenyi has worked for the past 12 years on mineral exploration programs across Canada. In 2007, Jason joined the Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources as the Industrial Minerals Geologist. He provides geologic consultation on the province’s potash, coal and diamond resources to companies interested in exploring for Saskatchewan’s minerals.

Chao Yang
Chao Yang obtained her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in geology from China and Ph. D. degree in geology from McGill University in Canada. She is a senior research geologist working for Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources. Her current researches are focused on the Devonian geology, especially potash deposits of the Prairie Evaporite in Saskatchewan.
