CSPG06FT Shales and Sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous in the southern Alberta Foothills

A sedimentological examination of some of the major shale and sandstone intervals of southern Alberta, mainly the Upper Colorado Group and Milk River Group. We will walk some of the classic river outcrops of southern Alberta and discuss the depositional environment and the organic geochemistry of some of the shale intervals. We will discuss topics from lithology, facies and the interpretation of the possible paleo-environment and geographics.  In addition, we will examine key surfaces and tie them to the subsurface of the Alberta Basin.

During the course the following questions will be discussed: How do we recognize these surfaces, what tools should we use and how do we correlate major shale intervals? How to recognize major clinoforms and the sequence stratigraphic aspect of shaly intervals? Does it matter for shale gas potential for the Colorado Group shales?
