IAH011FT City of Calgary Wastewater Treatment – Pine Creek Facility

Two field trips to the Pine Creek Waste Water Treatment Facility will take place on Friday, May 14th, 2010. Delegates will be picked up at 8:30am or 9:15am in front of the Hotel Arts and be dropped off at the Hotel Arts or at the Core Meltdown at 11:45 am or 12:30pm.

This exciting tour of Calgary’s latest, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility will include transportation to the Pine Creek wastewater facility and a dynamic presentation on Calgary’s wastewater and the innovative design of the Pine Creek facility.  Delegates will embark on a comprehensive walking tour showcasing the newest technology in water treatment, encompassing the headworks, clarifiers, bioreactors and sludge processing.  All safety equipment will be provided, along with drinks and snacks throughout the tour. There are few wastewater facilities in the world that compare to the Pine Creek wastewater treatment plant.

The Pine Creek Wastewater facility opened in May 2009 and is one of 3 facilities in Calgary that protects the public health and the environment by collecting and treating wastewater from Calgary and surrounding area residences, schools, hospitals, businesses and industries.  Wastewater enters the system where it flows through several thousand kilometers of underground pipes to the wastewater treatment plant.  Raw influent water passes thru headworks, clarifiers, liquid treatment processing (including bioreactors, secondary clarifiers and U.V. disinfection) and sludge-handling processing (including digesters, biosolids lagoons and CALGRO).  The Bonnybrook and Fish Creek Wastewater treatment facilities are capable of treating more than 572 megalitres of wastewater and sewage each day. With the inception of the Pine Creek facility, an additional 100 megalitres per day can be treated with a full build-out capacity of an additional 750 megalitres per day.

The Pine Creek Facility meets the immediate need to provide wastewater treatment capacity for Calgary and surrounding area residents and alleviate existing pressures being placed on the two current wastewater treatment facilities in Bonnybrook and Fish Creek.  With the growing need for water resources and the demand for environmentally responsible solutions, the City of Calgary has made an innovative stride is wastewater management with the construction of the Pine Creek wastewater facility.
