Geologic Underpinnings to Iconic Canadian Landscapes
Canada is blessed with thousands of truly inspirational land, sky and seascapes and these have served as the subject matter for countless artists over the past three centuries. Some of their interpretations of our landscape have become iconic images of our land, and are recognized instantly, both at home and abroad, as Canadian.
These same landscapes have also undergone the scrutiny of geoscientists, and although the nature of our inquiry may have been more pragmatic, it has been no less profound.
Both endeavors have sought to understand landscape and its relationship and value to humanity.
What do these two men have in common?

Surprisingly, more than you’d think.
The confluences between Earth science and art are both intriguing and illuminating. Come and explore these two world views in a compelling new exhibition specifically created for GeoCanada2010. Organized by the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences and the Glenbow Museum, this public outreach and educational event will be staged in two venues, at the convention itself and at a central downtown location with free public access.
For attendees at the conference it will offer an opportunity to view some great Canadian landscapes from across this nation, as well as to celebrate the mapping and interpretive efforts of individual geologists over the course of more than a century and a half. Housed in a space that will provide some refuge from the normal convention pandemonium, we anticipate that many convention registrants will use the exhibition as a place to meet fellow delegates, enjoy their lunch, or take some contemplative downtime.
For the lay public, it is our hope that the iconic art on display downtown will serve as an educational entry into understanding the underlying geological nature of landscape, and as well to gain an appreciation of the immense, indeed at times heroic effort that has gone into the bedrock mapping of our nation, generally done at public expense for the common good.
