Communicating Earth
Science to the Public

Increasingly many Earth science professionals deal with the public as part of their jobs. Earth scientists are also becoming more interested in sharing Earth science with the public to help them make informed decisions on societal issues that have a geoscience component. With a focus on community relations and outreach linked to fieldwork, exploration or education, the one-day “Communicating Earth Science to the Public” session will provide tools, tips, and techniques to successfully communicate science to a non-technical public including politicians, policy-makers, planners, community groups, the media, aboriginal groups, teachers, students and the general public.

Speakers and panels will explore different perspectives involved in communicating with various publics, and will look at innovative and proven approaches such as community activities, geotours, geoparks, outreach publications and links with museums. The session includes a half-day, hands-on workshop “Science with Impact” led by Let’s Talk Science to prepare participants for outreach activities. The keynote speaker will be Iain Stewart from the BBC TV Series “Earth – the Power of the Planet.”

Co-sponsored by the Canadian Geoscience Education Network, the Communicating Environmental Geoscience Working Group of the IUGS GEM (Geosciences for Environmental Management) Commission and Let’s Talk Science.
